Facing the giant

A Giant obstacle to any passion no matter how much you love it is Boredom.  Boredom is a wretched temptation to abandon a pursuit no matter how noble or positive the activity.  It’s a necessary stepping stone to higher ground.  A new level of thinking.  It is the treacherous bridge between what is and what could be.  Cross it.  Go through it.  Be in it.  Be bigger than the giant.

Wikipedia says:  Boredom is an emotional state experienced when an individual is left without anything in particular to do, and is not interested in their surroundings.  Boredom hangs out in every corner tempting you to give up and be in a bad mood and frantically search for anything occupy the  gaps in your mind.  The gaps where you are free of chatter and frenzy where REAL FEELINGS and REAL YOGA and a REAL RUN and REAL LIFE resides.

Here’s a bored yogi.  I think he’s just super relaxed.

I find the creep of boredom so close right now.  I know I am bigger than the giant but it’s growling in my gap – my place of authenticity – threatening to cloud my experience and jade me into cynicism and with dream balloons gone flaccid.  The Giant causes downward facing dog to seem like just a half-assed triangle shape that makes me stare at my belly skin upside down.  Not fun.

Instead Ado Muka Svanasana is a beautiful spine neutralizer that reboots the gorgeous plumb line that holds us up.  It suspends our central nervous system supported by the buttresses of our own limbs that warm and awaken with the request.  Is THAT boring?

When the Giant is all up in my grill, I think: “How many flippin’ ways can I teach or practice Warrior  II?”  Don’t get me wrong.  There’s a lot going on here:

Not the least of which is the copious amounts of back fat. (Don’t judge me.  I’m working on it.) But I hold it, stay with it and surrender to the discomfort of wanting to come out of the pose.  It is then that I become the pose.  The intent merges with the outcome and I am a warrior and everything that goes along with it.   Strong.  Fierce.  Ready. Steady. And able to beat any Giant.

Out of the way, boredom.   I’m in my zone.

  1. Up in your grill. You are so cool. I don’t get bored very often, but I know what you mean. This sounds really basic, but I don’t do stuff if I find that it has a tendency to repeatedly make me bored. If my mind is not engaged and I can’t stay present with it, I don’t do it.

  2. This might sound really bizzare, but consider that it might be the time of the year, not an issue with your practice, necessarily. I find that March and September are months full of discontent. I always feel like I need to be doing something bigger, or different, or more important, or something. I am never able to put my finger on it, just a vague itch inside my skin. March and September are months full of change in the seasons and the light. It can be hard to regulate our bodies in the midst of so much change. Or I could just be looking to hard for a reason.
